This course is a unique approach to color and is also an introduction to color theory along with the tools to train your eyes to recognize color in everything around you.  Course work can be done traditionally or digitally and will include developing a hue/temperature/value/chroma wheel, studying the chroma keys and how to manipulate the colors for each chromatic key, identifying color through temperature, and mixing colors accurately.  You will be solving color problems utilizing various subject matter.  We will discuss composing and lighting your own set-ups to do studies from life.

BIO: Ron Lemen is an illustrator, fine artist, concept designer, art director and art instructor with years of experience. He has worked for Sony, Activision, Ubi Soft and Mattel. Ron is currently freelancing full-time with clients that include;Upper Deck, Dragon Lance, White Wolf, Time Warner, Wizards of the Coast, Image Comics, Birdhouse Projects, Ride Snowboards, Disney, and more.

Mixing for the Color Wheel 00:24:00
Ron discusses the origin of the color wheel assignment and introduces the formulas for making one side of the color wheel. He demonstrates mixing color for the yellow, yellow-orange, and orange portions of the color wheel.
Constructing the Color Wheel 00:21:00
Materials and diagrams for constructing a color wheel are presented. Ron continues mixing for the color wheel, and he begins painting in the swatches on the wheel.

Ron uses images by Frederick Waugh to demonstrate the impressionable quality of painting an ocean scene. He explains how to begin the chroma study from a picture reference.
Color Theory: Value Study 00:26:00
Ron begins his value study with ultramarine blue and titanium white. He blocks in the image quickly finding the value relationship between objects.
High Chroma Study: Part 1 00:23:00
Ron searches for color notes by using his color wheel. He uses a limited range of value with no black paint and looks for the right balance between contrast and color.
High Chroma Study: Part 2 00:27:00
Ron discusses temperature shifts and how to stay away from making muddy colors in this exercise. He also talks about documenting painting instructions to help remember and preserve work.

Ron begins the study with a value string of ultramarine blue and white. He blocks in the high chroma and low chroma paintings at the same time.

Ron makes changes using counter-points to control the readability between the objects. He discusses how making mistakes is an important part of figuring out how to solve the challenges painting a picture.
