Explore the aspects of Fantasy Illustration, including the successful design of the fantasy elements that support an illustration such as costumes, props and architecture. Improve the structure and strengthen the underlying emotional impact and the composition of your illustrations. Compositions of real and limited space (graphical space) will be compared and experimented with. Creature and human character design though posing and integration into the composition will also be explored.
BIO: Craig Elliott has worked primarily in animation for Disney and DreamWorks, designing their animated films such as Hercules, Mulan, The Emperor's New Groove, Treasure Planet, Shark Tale, Flushed Away, Bee Movie, and Enchanted, Monsters vs. Aliens, and The Princess and the Frog as well as several upcoming features. Craig has also done fully painted comic book and cover artwork for Dark Horse Comics, World of Warcraft Trading cards, editorial illustration for Realms of Fantasy magazine, and more.

- Today’s lecture will begin by discussing how to simply pose figures and objects in a circular or figure 8 compositional format. Vignettes and posters will be the two main types of images covered. The in-class assignment will be to create a creature using a poster or vignette format in black and white.
- Week 1 In-Class Assignment Critique 00:43:00
- A critique of the in-class assignment will help develop each student's work. The first homework assignment will be to make 5 thumbnails, and pick 1 or 2 to develop further.
- Homework Critique Part 1 00:42:00
- Each class will begin with a critique of the previous weeks homework assignment. Today’s critique will guide student work into more developed illustrations.
- Homework Critique Part 2 00:20:00
- A demonstration will show how to use overlays for painting with color.
- Shape Theme 00:20:00
- A shape language lecture will show how to use shape design for storytelling. The in-class assignment will be to make a shape themed design using 1 or 2 shapes.
- Week 2 In-Class Assignment Critique 00:17:00
- The class will end with a critique of the in-class assignment. The homework assignment will be to complete a figure 8 or circle shape themed illustration.
- Real Space Critique part 1 01:20:00
- A perspective overview will help adjust student work into a more dynamic designs.

- The use of ellipses and three point perspective will be discussed.
- Fantasy Illustration | Lighting Demo 00:55:00
- A painting of an apple will show how to indicate daylight when painting with color.There will be an overview of color theory and painting form. The homework assignment will be complete the real space composition.
- Real Space 3 Critique Part 1 00:44:00
- Colors and lighting will be adjusted to improve student work.
- Real Space 3 Critique Part 2 00:47:00
- Perspective, color and light will be adjusted to improve student work.

- The in-class assignment will be to draw a ground plane with a grid incorporating a vehicle or architecture.
- Fantasy Illustration | Grid Critique 00:29:00
- Paint-over demos will adjust each student's work. The homework assignment will be to use a grid to create a surface on which to place a vehicle or architecture.
