Welcome to Exterior Landscape Painting with Lynn Gertenbach.  In this demonstration Lynn will explain her impressionistic approach to Plein Air painting.  She will share her choices of color and brushes as she loosely paints a garden pond.  Lynn will discuss how she approaches the challenges of the constantly changing sunlight.  She will share her decision making process and preferences for materials she has developed over her career. Bio: Lynn Gertenbach received her formal art education at the Colorado Institute of Art, Denver and Art Center School of Design, Los Angeles. She also attended UCLA, and studied with well-known artists. She began traveling around the world when she was 21, and spent many days in Europe’s great museums drawing knowledge from the Old Masters. She had a one woman show in 1972 with 75 of her India works, hosted by LACMA’s Dr. Pratap Pal. She has exhibited in the Pacific Asia museum, the Carnegie Museum, the Fredrick Weisman Museum, Malibu, the Haggin Museum, and the Isetan Museum, Tokyo. Lynn was inducted into the Hall of Fame and received the Life Achievement award from the Colorado Institute of Art. Her work has been purchased by the prestigious California Club and the Southern California Edison Company.

Course Curriculum

    • Exterior Landscape Painting | Introduction 00:09:00
    • Welcome to Exterior Landscape Painting with Lynn Gertenbach. The materials and methods of painting outdoors will be discussed before beginning the painting.
    • Exterior Landscape Painting | Abstract Design 00:23:00
    • There will be an overview of the color palette before beginning the painting with a thin wash of paint. Large simple shapes will be roughly blocked-in to develop the composition.
    • Exterior Landscape Painting | Adjusting Shapes FREE 00:35:00
    • The colors for the lilies will be premixed before painting them on the canvas. Opaque paint and a variation of color will be used in continuously adjusting the water and lilies.
    • Developing Focal Points 00:26:00
    • The palette will be kept clean and organized to keep achieve accurate color mixtures. Color temperature variations will be added to help create depth and indicate light. Details will be added to specific areas to draw focus.

    • Reflections and light patterns will be refined to maintain the intended focal points. The contrast will be maintained to complete the impressionistic landscape.
