Figure studies from photographs can be useful exercises to help understand the human form. Vadim Zanginian will share his impressionistic approach to painting the figure using a limited palette. The palette will consist of five colors to reduce the variables in controlling color temperature.The process will be kept simple using large abstract shapes before focusing on smaller details. Bio: Vadim Zanginian graduated from the Art and Theatre Institute where he trained in Russian Academic traditions in painting the figure. From 1994-2003 he worked as a graphic designer and completed many contemporary graphics logos and posters for rock singers including Cher, Paul McCartney, and Moody Blues. He also provided his graphic skills to leading companies like Guess, Harley Davidson, and Hard Rock Cafe. In his art, Vadim aims to get an impression in limited time with a limited palette.

Course Curriculum

    • Background & Block-In FREE 00:18:00
    • The palette will be introduced and the composition will be discussed. The canvas will be filled with a grayish tone and the figure will be blocked-in simply.
    • Developing the Figure FREE 00:22:00
    • A towel and a kneaded eraser will be used adjust the figure. The head will be worked on, and dark tones will be added to give depth to the background.
    • Developing the Background 00:22:00
    • Highlights and dark tones will be added to develop the background. Forms of the figure will be indicated with simple brush marks and highlights.
    • Controlling Value & Color Temperature 00:35:00
    • Time will be spent using warm and cool colors to develop the form on the figure. The background will also be developed further.
    • Skin Tones & Final Decisions 00:15:00
    • Cool and warm skin tones will be used to indicate the dimensions of the torso and face. Light and dark accents will be added before the end of the session.
    • Final Thoughts 00:05:00
    • Vadim will make some adjustments off camera, then discuss the process of finishing the painting.
